Abstract
This paper investigates the strategic role of free ports in stimulating national economic growth, specifically within the Iraqi context. The research highlights how free ports serve as catalysts for international trade, foreign direct investment, and industrial diversification by offering tax exemptions, simplified administrative procedures, and advanced logistical infrastructure. A significant portion of the study is dedicated to evaluating the proposed Free Economic Zone at Al-Faw Port, arguing that its geographical location and maritime potential make it a cornerstone for Iraq’s post-war reconstruction and integration into the global economy. The author emphasizes that the establishment of this zone would not only generate employment and increase non-oil revenues but also modernize Iraq’s transportation sector and improve its competitive standing in regional trade. Ultimately, the paper concludes that for Al-Faw’s free zone to succeed, it requires robust legislative frameworks, political stability, and substantial investment in modern port technologies to transform it into a major transit hub between East and West.
